Spanish at Monte Vista

Foreign Language at Monte Vista is offered for students of all grade levels. Currently, Spanish is the only foreign language offered on the campus and it is offered at two different capacities. There is standard Spanish and Spanish for Native Spanish Speakers. Speaking Spanish as a home language does not automatically lead to student enrollment in the Spanish Speakers series. The following is a basic overview of the sequences available to students. Students may place to higher levels from prior Spanish experience and/or testing.

About Placement in Spanish
  • ALL students who sign up for Spanish are required to take a placement test before they start the class
  • If students speak Spanish, they will take the Spanish Speakers test; if students are new to Spanish, they will still take a test (much simpler) to assess their level of Spanish
  • Some students take Spanish in middle school; the placement test will reflect that and allow them to move up a level (rather than start with Spanish 1)
  • In the past, most students have been tested during the month of May; freshmen are the only ones tested until we meet them
For Native Spanish Speakers in the Spanish Speakers Classes
  • Any student who speaks and understands Spanish will take the Spanish Speakers placement test
  • Students are required to speak Spanish during the class period (levels can be adjusted based on student profiency)
  • The class is taught entirely in Spanish, which I let them know to avoid any surprises!
  • Students improve their Spanish writing skills.
  • Spanish Speakers need to take the 3/4 level before enrolling in the honors course. Spanish Speakers 3/4 and 5/6H teach students the skills they need in order to succeed in the AP Spanish Literature class.
