Monte Vista's AP Program

AP OVERVIEW

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) courses are college-level courses taught at the high school. Monte Vista offers over 15 AP Courses with accompnaying AP Tests scheduled in May. This is separate from the Dual Enrollment Program with Cuyamaca College, which is an alternative method for students to receive college credit.

Students are taught a rigorous depth and breadth of material following the College Board required elements for each course. The purpose of the AP program is to enable students to be competitive with other students throughout the nation on challenging AP exams in early May. Successfully completing these exams allows students to earn college credit for courses taken in high school and is a bonus for students and their families when facing the rising costs of college education.

We encourage all AP students to take the AP exam in the subjects they are enrolled in. Colleges and unviersities only accept college credit when an exam has been taken and passed (the amount of credit varies by exam and college). Even within the California State University (CSU) and the University of California (UC) systems, policies vary from college to college, university to university. By earning college credit in high school and skipping introductory courses (or receiving elective credit) in college, you can save time and money as they work toward a college degree.

Should a student pass the AP Exam, Course Credit will apply to their college trascripts as (Credit/No Credit) rather than a letter grade contirbuting to collegiate GPA. Their grade in the course will, however, affect their high school GPA.

The AP Exam is scored out of 5. A 3 on the AP Exam is a passing score. A 5 is the highest score one can achieve. A more in-depth breakdown can be found here.
